Season 3, Ep. 1: J.P. Hill – "People want real freedom"

The teacher, worker and aspiring community organizer on the stories of collective action that keep him going

I’m not sure there’s anyone on the internet writing more clearly and persuasively about social change than J.P. Hill. His weekly newsletter, New Means, deals soberly with urgent sociopolitical issues, yet Hill’s voice is consistently nonreactive, solutions-oriented, invitational and even hopeful.

Those qualities shine in this interview, as we kick off Season Three of A Soulful Revolution Podcast with a conversation about the communities, spiritualities, and stories of collective action that lend this Soulful Revolutionary his fire. Just as a foretaste, we talk about:

  • his Jewish upbringing and antizionist political radicalization;

  • his seminary education, especially his study of Octavia Butler’s work;

  • teaching high schoolers and organizing mutual aid efforts in New York City.

Above all, it is Hill’s genuine care for people and his commitment to building alternatives with his neighbors that keep his work profoundly human in these dehumanizing times. I expect your listening will leave you feeling more human too.

My hope is a determination that isn't necessarily tied to events. It's more of a faith… it's a choice to believe or a choice to have faith that people want better for themselves and for one another. People want real freedom.

— J.P. Hill
