Welcome to the edge of the dance floor.
It’s a place I know well (having practically lived in a salsa club throughout my 20s). For some, it teems with anticipation, full of bodies begging to move, to jump in and do the damn thing. They bide their time for the dopest beat to drop, or the perfect person to catch their eye. Others are keeping their distance from the center of the swirl, for fear of getting toes (and egos) stepped on. For others still, it is a place to catch a breath and catch inspiration from those moving to the music.
The edge of the dance floor is a place to reflect, to reconnect, to reorient, to rejuvenate.
This is where A Soulful Revolution stands.
Right here: where we take it all in, trying to locate our place in the work for a better world. Where we practice our moves, gaining new strategies for future action. Where we nurse our wounds and tend our bruised egos with tenderness, for transformation’s sake.
There’s a world-changing party going on. A Soulful Revolution is a loving invitation from the edge of the inside to keep showing up to the movement for justice with curiosity, commitment to connection, and most of all, joy.
I am a fellow dancer: I am a nurturer of faithful dissidents to the status quo, fiercely committed to a spirituality of nonviolence and a political praxis of love in unabashedly strategic action. This dance is beautiful, joyful, and freeing.
And, I’ve had my toes stepped on. I’ve stepped on a good share of toes too. As someone who has always relished being at the center of the dance floor, I’m learning to enjoy stepping back to the edge with regularity and intention. I’m learning what Jesus-according-to-Eugene-Peterson called the “unforced rhythms of grace.” I’m growing and changing. It’s all a spiritual practice.
Join me on the edge of the dance floor.
I’ll be posting once a week (hold me to that, dear reader! That accountability is part of why I’m here).
Free subscribers will get access to most of my posts. Let’s build a community together.
Paid subscribers will get subscriber-only posts and access to the full archive. Your subscription helps me prioritize writing and reflection amidst the busyness of mothering twin toddlers and building a community of faithful dissidents to the status quo in my neck of the woods.
Let’s dance.
